What Is Narrow AI?

Narrow AI is artificial intelligence built to do one specific task or a small set of related tasks, such as answering support questions, flagging fraud, or generating text. Every AI system in production today is narrow AI, in contrast to artificial general intelligence, which would match human flexibility across any task and does not yet exist.

How narrow AI differs from general AI

Narrow AI is defined by its limits. A system can be superhuman at its own task, beating any person at chess or reading medical scans faster than a radiologist, and still be unable to do anything outside what it was built and trained for. The chess model cannot answer an email, and the scan model cannot hold a conversation.

Artificial general intelligence would be different in kind, able to understand and learn any intellectual task a human can and move between them freely. Despite how capable recent systems have become, this does not exist. Even a broad language model that handles many tasks is a wide form of narrow AI, not a general intelligence.

Why narrow AI matters

The term matters because it sets realistic expectations. Headlines often blur the line between today's task-specific systems and a general intelligence that is not here, which leads teams to over-trust a tool or fear the wrong risks. Knowing that every deployed system is narrow AI keeps the focus on what a given model can actually do, and where its edges are.

In practice, narrow AI is exactly what makes business use possible. A system aimed at one well-defined job is something you can measure, test, and rely on, which is where real value comes from today.
