What Is AI Red Teaming?
Red teaming is the practice of deliberately attacking an AI system with adversarial inputs to find where it fails or can be manipulated, so those weaknesses can be fixed before the system reaches production. Testers try to make the model produce unsafe, biased, or off-limits output, imitating how a real bad actor would probe it.
How AI red teaming works
Red teaming borrows its name and mindset from security, where a red team plays the attacker to test a defense. Applied to AI, a group of people, and increasingly automated tools, sets out to break a model on purpose. They attempt jailbreaks that bypass its safety rules, prompt injections that hijack its instructions, and inputs designed to surface bias or leak sensitive data.
Each successful attack is a finding. The team documents how they broke the system and hands it back so the weakness can be closed, whether through better guardrails, changes to the model, or new checks in the surrounding pipeline. It is an ongoing exercise, since new attack techniques keep appearing.
Why AI red teaming matters
Red teaming matters because normal testing checks whether a system works when used as intended, while red teaming checks what happens when someone tries to misuse it. A model can pass every standard evaluation and still be one clever prompt away from producing something it should refuse. Only adversarial testing surfaces that gap.
For any AI system exposed to real users, this is part of shipping responsibly. At Custom AI Studio, pressure-testing a system against misuse before it goes live is part of treating governance as something built into how the system runs, not written into a policy document and forgotten.
