What Is a Prompt Template?
A prompt template is a reusable prompt with fixed wording and blank slots that get filled in with specific values each time it runs. Instead of writing a new prompt for every case, a team writes one template with variables, such as a customer name or a document, so the model receives consistent, well-structured instructions on every request.
How a prompt template works
A template separates the parts of a prompt that stay the same from the parts that change. The instructions, tone, format, and any examples are written once and locked in. The pieces that vary per request are marked as placeholders, for example a slot for the user's question or a block where a document gets inserted.
At runtime, the application fills those placeholders with real values and sends the finished prompt to the model. A support tool might hold one template for drafting replies, dropping in the customer's message and account details each time, so every reply is generated from the same tested instructions.
Why prompt templates matter for AI
Templates are what make prompting reliable at scale. A prompt refined once and reused everywhere gives steady, predictable output, which matters far more in a production system than in a one-off chat. They also make prompts easier to test and improve, since a change to the template updates every request that uses it.
At Custom AI Studio, well-structured prompt templates are part of how a system stays consistent in production, rather than depending on whoever happens to be typing the prompt that day.
