What Is an AI Prompt?

A prompt is the input you give an AI model to get a response, usually text containing a question, instruction, or example. It is how you tell the model what you want, and its wording strongly shapes the output, since the model responds to exactly what the prompt says and the context it provides.

How a prompt works

A prompt is the text a model reads before it generates a response. The model takes the whole prompt as its starting point and produces output that continues from and responds to it, so what you include, and how you phrase it, directly steers what you get back. A vague prompt tends to give a vague answer; a specific one with clear instructions and context gives a more focused result.

Prompts often have more than one part. Many systems combine a system prompt, hidden instructions that set the model's role and rules, with the user prompt, the actual request typed by a person. Adding relevant context or a few examples in the prompt is a common way to guide the model toward the answer you want.
