What Is a Large Language Model?
A large language model (LLM) is an AI model trained on huge amounts of text to understand and generate human language. It learns patterns in how words and ideas fit together, which lets it answer questions, write, summarize, and hold a conversation. LLMs are the technology behind most modern AI chat and writing tools.
How a large language model works
A large language model works by predicting text one piece at a time. Trained on vast collections of writing, it learns the statistical patterns of language, then generates a response by repeatedly predicting the most fitting next piece, given everything so far and the prompt it was asked.
It does not look up answers in a database. It produces them from the patterns it learned, which is why an LLM can write fluently about many topics but can also state things that are wrong with the same confidence. It is also why the same prompt can produce different wording each time.

Large language models are the reason AI became broadly useful for everyday work, since so many tasks come down to reading and writing language.
