What Is a System Prompt?

A system prompt is a set of background instructions that define an AI model's role, tone, and rules, applied before any user request. The user usually does not see it, but it shapes how the model behaves across the whole conversation, setting the ground rules the model follows when it responds.

How a system prompt works

A system prompt is given to the model separately from what the user types, and it typically comes first.
