Computer vision is a field of AI that lets software interpret images and video, identifying objects, text, patterns, and activity the way a person visually would. It turns visual input into information a system can act on.
How computer vision works
Computer vision models are trained on large sets of labeled images, learning the visual patterns that distinguish one thing from another. Once trained, a model can take a new image and identify what is in it, where it is, and sometimes what is happening. Reading the text on a scanned form, spotting a defect on a production line, or recognizing a face are all computer vision tasks built on this same foundation.

Computer vision matters because a large share of business information arrives as images: scanned documents, photos, video, and forms. Work that once required a person to look and record can be handled by a model, from extracting data off an invoice to flagging a problem in a camera feed.
