What Is a Knowledge Base?

Retrieval & Data Also known as: KB

A knowledge base is an organized store of information that a system or team can draw on to answer questions. In AI, it is the collection of trusted documents and data a system retrieves from to ground its answers, rather than relying only on what a model learned during training.

How a knowledge base works

A knowledge base gathers an organization's information, help articles, product docs, policies, past tickets, into one place that can be searched. In an AI system, that content is usually prepared for retrieval: broken into passages, converted into embeddings, and stored so the system can pull the most relevant pieces for a given question.

When a user asks something, the system searches the knowledge base, retrieves the passages that match, and gives them to the model as context for its answer. This is the retrieval step in retrieval-augmented generation, and the knowledge base is the source it draws on.

Why a knowledge base matters for AI

A knowledge base matters because it is what lets an AI system answer from real, current, organization-specific information instead of guessing from training alone. The quality of the answers depends heavily on the quality of the knowledge base: accurate, well-organized content produces reliable answers, while stale or messy content produces poor ones. At Custom AI Studio, turning a client's scattered information into a clean knowledge base is often the groundwork for a system that can answer questions from it.

What does KB stand for?
KB stands for knowledge base.
What is a knowledge base in AI?
It is the trusted set of documents and data an AI system retrieves from to answer questions, so its responses are grounded in real, specific information rather than only the model's training.
What is the difference between a knowledge base and a database?
A database stores structured records for exact queries. A knowledge base holds information meant to answer questions, often including unstructured documents, and in AI is set up for meaning-based retrieval rather than only exact matches.
