The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and data sources through a single, consistent interface. Instead of building a custom integration for each tool, developers expose tools and data through MCP, and any compatible AI application can use them the same way.

How MCP works

MCP works by defining a common way for AI applications and external systems to talk. A tool or data source is wrapped in an MCP server that describes what it offers, and an AI application acts as an MCP client that can discover and use those capabilities through the shared protocol. Because the interface is standard, the same integration works across any application that speaks MCP, rather than being rebuilt for each one.
