What Is an AI Agent?

Agents & Orchestration Also known as: autonomous agent, agent

An AI agent is a software system that pursues a goal on its own, deciding what to do next and taking action through tools rather than only producing text. It perceives its context, reasons about the next step, acts, and reads the result, repeating that loop until the task is done.

How an AI agent works

An AI agent is usually a language model wired to a set of tools and given a goal. The model decides which tool to call, the tool runs and returns a result, and the model reads that result to decide the next move. A support agent, for example, can look up an order, check a policy, issue a refund, and write the reply, moving through those steps itself instead of handing each one to a person.

AI agent vs chatbot

The difference is whether it can act. A chatbot answers questions inside a conversation. An agent takes actions in other systems to finish a task, and only talks when talking is the task.

Why AI agents matter for business

AI agents are where AI starts doing work instead of just answering about it. A chatbot can tell a customer how to reset a password, while an agent can reset it. That shift from advice to action is what lets an agent take a whole task off a person's plate, which is why most business AI now aims at agents rather than plain assistants.

At Custom AI Studio, AI agents are the core of the systems we build, each one scoped to a task with a measurable return.

Is an AI agent the same as agentic AI?
They are closely related. An AI agent is the individual system. Agentic AI is the broader idea of software that acts autonomously toward goals. One agent is agentic, and so is a group of them working together.
What is an example of an AI agent?
A customer-support agent that resolves tickets end to end, a research agent that gathers and summarizes sources, or an operations agent that processes invoices are all common examples.
