Agentic AI is artificial intelligence that pursues a goal across multiple steps on its own, deciding what to do next and taking action through connected tools instead of waiting for a prompt at every turn. Where a chatbot answers a question, an agentic system acts on it, planning an approach, calling the tools it needs, checking the result, and continuing until the goal is met.

How agentic AI works

An agentic system runs a loop rather than a single response. It takes in a goal and the current context, reasons about the next step, acts by calling a tool or an API, then reads what came back and decides whether it is finished or needs another pass. That loop of perceive, reason, act, and observe is what lets one agent carry a task that used to take a person several manual steps across a few systems.

Agentic AI vs a chatbot

The difference is action. A chatbot generates a reply and stops. An agentic system carries a task to completion across tools and turns.

Why agentic AI matters for business

Agentic AI moves AI from answering questions to doing work, which is where the operational return sits. Gartner projects that 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI by 2028, up from less than 1% in 2024. The caution matters too: Gartner also expects more than 40% of agentic AI projects to be canceled by the end of 2027, most of them early experiments without a clear business case. Not quite. An AI agent is the individual system that pursues a goal. Agentic AI is the broader property of acting autonomously toward goals. A single agent is agentic, and so is a coordinated group of them.
