What Is Natural Language Processing?

Foundations Also known as: NLP

Natural language processing (NLP) is the field of AI focused on getting computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. It covers the techniques that let software read text, recognize speech, translate, and respond in words, and it underlies tools from search engines to voice assistants to large language models.

How natural language processing works

Natural language processing works by turning language into a form computers can handle, then applying models to it. Text is broken into pieces and represented as numbers, and a model trained on large amounts of language learns the patterns needed for a task, whether that is classifying a message, pulling out names, translating, or generating a reply.

The field has shifted over time. Older NLP relied on hand-written rules and narrow, task-specific models. Today much of it runs on large language models, which handle many language tasks with a single general model rather than a separate system built for each one.

Why natural language processing matters for AI

Natural language processing matters because so much human information and interaction happens in language. Enabling software to work with text and speech opens up search, translation, summarization, customer support, and the conversational tools people now use daily. NLP is the branch of AI behind all of it. At Custom AI Studio, natural language processing is central to systems that read a client's documents and understand what their customers are asking.

What does NLP stand for?
NLP stands for natural language processing.
What is NLP used for?
Reading and understanding text, recognizing and generating speech, translating languages, classifying and summarizing documents, extracting information, and powering chat and voice assistants.
What is the difference between NLP and LLMs?
NLP is the whole field of computers working with human language. A large language model is a modern, general approach that now handles many NLP tasks at once. LLMs are a tool within NLP, not a replacement for the field.
